Die Welle, or The Wave, is a German film that tells the story of a teacher who creates a fascist regime within the classroom to show how this would be possible nowadays. The film shows the attraction that young people feel to the idea of belonging to a group (the unity of the masses is a characteristic of this movement), how their behavior changed and increased the feeling of superiority. The film is very good in this aspect, by showing how damaging autocracies can be and how that could happen today.
Fascism is a political regime that emerged in Italy with Benito Mussolini, who was formerly a member of the Italian Socialist Party, and created the National Fascist Party. Fascist ideas spread to various countries such as Hitler's Nazi Germany, Stalin's Russia, Franco's Spain or Plinio Salgado's Integralism in Brazil. Fascism is nationalist, totalitarian, militaristic, ethnocentric based on the idea of the unity of race, culture, territory and language. Fascists also controlled the media, advertised their ideology, and arrested or killed those who opposed the State, and this was depicted on the scene where students stop a newspaper from being spread at school.
The Wave brings a very important reflection to us. Can fascism exist in our present society? Some European countries still have some xenophobic ideals but what about Brazil? Brazil is an extremely mixed country unlike Europe that is mostly white, Brazil is formed by Indians, blacks and Europeans. The Brazilian mix would bring shivers to Hitler. And how could we talk about uniting culture in Brazil? Our culture is as vast as our territory. Different typical foods in each region, linguistic variations, rhythms and different manifestations from north to south. There is so much diversity in our culture.
In Brazil, the term fascist has been used as a trivial matter, as the historian Ademir Luiz said "Everything that may be against or delay the process of emancipation of minorities, begins to be called fascism. If you disagree with someone, the first thing you are going to accuse this person of is being a fascist. Fascism is the non dialogue, but often the ones who requires the dialogue is not willing to dialogue."
So who can be considered fascist? Analyzing classical historical fascism it is difficult to find someone with all the totalitarian characteristics.
Mussolini's philosophy was "Everything within the State, nothing outside the State, nothing against the State". He also said, "The basic principle of the Fascist doctrine is its conception of the state, its essence, its functions and its objectives. "For Fascism, the state is absolute, individuals and groups, relative."
People don't even stop to analyze before calling someone a word with a meaning so obscure and terrible but instead make it completely banal. Fascism is anti-liberal, anti-communist, anti-conservative, against individuality, totaly collectivist and loves violence against all who are against its ideology. Fascism has killed millions of people, 26 milions only in Germany, so we have to be very careful when we use this word because it can not be trivial otherwise we would be forgetting and disrespecting the victims of this period of terror.
Knowing all of this how can we recognize a fascist in modern days? If you still believe in fascism in Brazil then it would be: When a person wants someone to live the same way he/she does, have the same opinion as he/she does and wants to censor different opinions, wants you to vote for the same candidate as he/she does and if you don't you are stupid and inferior, thinks that you must defend the same matters and ideologies that he/she does and thinks that everyone on the other side with a different thinking is a fascist then this person is the real fascist
